Janis Ian's Tribulations with Facebook

JANIS BLOCKED AGAIN
Hello again. Janis' wife Pat here. 30 hours after the "24 hour block" was instituted, Janis was still blocked. About half an hour ago the block was lifted. She immediately attempted to post a copy of the Facebook community standards to show why she'd been blocked - and was promptly blocked from posting again.
Here is what she tried to post.
If you don't hear from her in the next few days, you know why...
Hello. I'm back. My offense against "community standards" was that the cartoon I posted showed a woman's nipples. Gee. I feel so much better now that I know even The New Yorker was banned from Facebook for the same reason a few years back.
Here's my takeaway:
Female nipples: bad.
Male nipples: good.
Female breasts with nipple: only if breastfeeding.
Male breasts with nipple: good.
Photos of paintings, sculpture, or other art depicting nude figures: good unless they annoy people who then complain a lot.
Photos of cartoons depicting nude figures: bad. Apparently cartoons are not considered "art."
Photos of torture to promote sadism or masochism: bad.
Photos of torture to raise awareness of or condemn torture: good.
Photos of animal torture to promote animal cruelty: bad.
Photos of animal torture to raise awareness of or condemn animal torture: good.
Photos of people who come to this page just so they can complain to Facebook about it and try to get me blocked again: unavailable.
OH HECK. I just tried to post a photo of Facebook's community standards page. I am now blocked from posting photos for the next 24 hours because trying to post Facebook's community standards "violated community standards."
Really?
That algorithm needs some serious work.
Here's the community standards page:

Here's The New Yorker article:

If you don't hear from me again, you'll know why.

@Region Philbis,
I like her, natch, but don't read her as I don't do Facebook.
Re Bob Mankoff, to me he can do no wrong. He's easily among my favorite writers/New Yorker people.

@ossobucotemp,
I just read Mankoff on the matter of the Facebook thing, enjoyed it, of course.

Well, they do almost everything via algorithm and, yes, it's got to be updated.

Consider this. There are a billion active Facebook users (and something like 1.7 B accounts). You'd think there would be an army of employees, but there isn't. Instead, they have (currently) fewer than 12,700. See: http://www.statista.com/statistics/273563/number-of-facebook-employees/

Is this the Janis Ian who I remember for "Society's Child" in 1965, when she was 14? Who Bill Cosby insulted? She is a totally admirable person.

@edgarblythe,
I don't think it's an algorithm that's the problem. It's most likely one of her lesser known Facebook friends or family members. Does she have some on going feud with a Facebook friend that's not really a friend in real life?

I think this mystery person has a vendetta against her (politically or socially or otherwise). Like the assess here at a2k who automatically thumb down a Setanta or Orallroy post, even if it's not political or mean spirited or divisive). They're carrying an irrational grudge with them wherever they post.

@tsarstepan,
Seems to be people who "followed" her just for the sake of of tormenting her.

Facebook has been good to Janis and allowed her a huge following, there are many others who work and struggle much harder than her for considerably less.

BTW, Janis has been on my friend list for years.

I appreciate her principle to a degree in this but don't think it is worthy of making such a tissfit over.

If you want to post woman's nipples and breasts and all, Twitter will be much more than happy oblige.

Facebook has done well to keep the lewd, all out porno trolls away and I am not lumping Janis into that category but I think she should tone it down.

Ass crack is allowed too, as long as it is a fat person at Walmart. Smile

Lighten up Janis, you are privileged as it is.

I saw Trump statue's wee wee on facebook the other day. Don't know if it was taken down. There is lots of stuff on there rougher than the cartoon Janis posted. And, by the way, she only shared from somebody else. I saw the same cartoon on there a few years ago.

What passes for Haikus these days are not genuine to me.

a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world.
an English imitation of this.

Unless you figure in "an English imitation of this."

@edgarblythe,
I am not an expert at haiku but I think all poetry requires a bit of talent and beauty, of course, is in the eye of the beholder.

I prefer the song form better, verse, verse, chorus, bridge etc...

Things still need to generally be "written between the lines" and talent is also required for song form.

Haiku is a bit too limiting for my taste, but I do not dislike it.

But most haiku writing on a site like this is just for the fun of it anyway, so I am not criticizing.
