Is 'yes' correct or should it be 'Yes'?

The doctor further asked my mother if she was trying for a second child, and she readily said ‘yes’.

1. Is 'yes' correct? Or should it be 'Yes' or yes?
2. Is 'readily' necessary?

Thanks.

"Yes" is an adverb and isn't capitalized unless it starts a sentence. "Readily" is being used to convey "willingness," "without hesitation," etc. In regard to necessity, other works can be employed to express the same meaning.

If you mean to quote the speaker's mother then use quotes, otherwise don't.

'Yes' is a one-word sentence and requires capitalisation.

Thanks, Contrex.

Is a comma needed after "said"?
