l am having real problems with this grid, so would like a bit of help with some of the clues that will enable me to finish others as well, here goes

231d Hackles (???SE?E?)

Thank you so much for your help, it will go a long way to helping me finish the grid. Hows the weather up there, we are still having sunny weather although temps have dropped a fair bit. My roses which we put in this year are looking absolutely fabulous. How is your wife in this hot weather. ttfn xx

The answer I gave you the other day should be EXC not ESC.
We are fine in the hot weather, put on a fan in the bedroom to cool it down. The other clues you asked about, I have posted my answers.
