Is A World Free of Violence Possible?

Have you or a member of your family ever been a victim of violence? Do you have reason to be afraid that you will? Violence has been called a “growing public health problem across the world. What can be done to turn this around?

@anthony1312002,
a) Yes

b) Don't spend time thinking about it...why waste time on what might not happen?

c) We could all join hands and sing campfire songs or alternatively wait for the polar icecap to finish off melting which would surely do us all in and then there'd be peace. Or maybe we can have all the divine folk get raptured (oddly always with their clothes on) and then the devil's pit would open and consume those left unraptured and they'd be swallowed up and consumed in the burning fires thus ending all violence on planet Earth.

d) To your thread/topic title, technically anything is possible.

@anthony1312002,
The planet Venus is a world free of violence. So yes, it is possible.

@Sturgis,
I like the multiple choice answer you gave. For the sake of argument let's go with your A answer of yes.

A lasting solution to violence ultimately involves people—their attitudes and behavior. For violent people to change, such traits as pride, greed, and selfishness need to give way to love, respect, and concern for others. What do you think can motivate a person to make such drastic changes?

The answer is an powerful alien overlord who can rule us with an iron fist.

If there is a super-powerful alien being who has advanced technology that reads our minds and can punish us for any bad thought, then he could enforce peace on the planet.

A cruel dictator is the only sure way to peace on Earth.

@maxdancona,
Wrong.

Violence begets peace.
On the other hand -
Peace begets violence.

I, promote peace, virtue and decency - Yet, I will protect thus, violently, if needs be.
And so will every lifeform...

@anthony1312002,
As long as humans habitat the earth, there will always be violence.
Humanity 101.

Violence comes in many forms, many which cannot be predicted.

@mark noble,
That isn't how it is going to work.

When the Alien Overlord comes, he will show his complete power by bringing pestilence and death. He is going to round up everyone who doesn't accept his authority and then throw them into a lake of fire.

Only the people who worship him will be allowed to stay. That will lead to 1000 years of peace.

If the Overlord shows that he has ultimate power over life and death... and that he is willing to use it, the people will fall into line and bow down to Him. Then there will be peace.

Not possible. History proves it.

@mark noble,
You don't believe the Alien Overlord is going to come back and rule the world for 1000 years of peace?

@cicerone imposter,
I know it does seem that way. And there is a great deal of history to back it up. But is it because it cannot be helped? Our in some cases, could it be that some consciously choose to be violent, not because they have to be, but because it's easier than keeping one's composure?

@anthony1312002,
No. Humans are violent animals. Look at the road rage in this country.

@cicerone imposter,
Yes, I have seen that. But in each of those cases it became clear that those perpetrating the rage did not try to control their anger. A lasting solution to violence ultimately involves people—their attitudes and behavior. For violent people to change, such traits as pride, greed, and selfishness need to give way to love, respect, and concern for others. And there are many examples that have shown this is possible.

@anthony1312002,
Your thesis sounds rational, but not realistic. Wars have been waged against their own people based on religion and other issues, and its common in many countries.

@TomTomBinks,
Hear me out a little. Suppose a person were to choose to live by this principle?

Mark 12:31 ‘You must love your neighbor as yourself.’

What do you think the results would be?
