When You Can't Vote within the Two Party Framework

Reply Sun 12 Jun, 2016 06:09 pm
This thread is not intended to argue the merits of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Here, it is a given that many independents will do as they please, which includes voting for establishment candidates as well as voting third party and abstaining altogether. We don't need to be informed that a third party cannot compete successfully, as we have history telling us the same already. But there is such a thing as building to the future and promoting causes. The only third party candidates I know of, of any weight at all, are the Green Party's Jill Stein and the Libertarian Party's Gary Johnson. I have been carefully avoiding them, while the Democratic Primaries were being contested.
Now, I am ready to check into them.

@edgarblythe,
Not enough people care or are interested in creating a third party; it will not go anywhere significant.
Look at the republicans; they have Trump who has split the party. Even then, the party with survive Trump.

@edgarblythe,
If I was an American voter in a non-swing state, I think Mr. Johnson would get my vote.

I'm closer to bogowo's libertarian anarchist position than I was a decade ago and Mr. Johnson's the closest thing the US has to that position right now.

@edgarblythe,
Me neither, but it's fun to see her trying to lure him. I think he probably takes the spoiler aspect too seriously to shoehorn Trump into the Oval. But I hope he'll start either building on the Green Party or starting a Progressive party. I'm ready.

@edgarblythe,
No worries. I was looking for her presidential debate with Johnson last election cycle, shortly after she (and her running mate) were illegally detained (8 or so hours, I recall) for attempting to join Obama and Romney's scripted debate.

Maybe 25 to 30 years ago Gary Johnson votes and policy ideas might have been considered to be EXTREME right wing positions. By todays standards Gary Johnson would fit in perfectly with what the republican party has become. Especially the EXTREME right wing in the House of Representative. The EXTREME right wing policies of todays republican party has become the norm. Especially in the House. Gary Johnson's policy views is pretty much in line with the House republicans of this generation. Gary Johnson is what now has become a typical House republican.

True enough.

I have not zeroed in on Jill Stein, because I am waiting for her to get finished with trying to influence Bernie Sanders to go with her. I don't see it happening and it annoys me to see her persistence.
