Three weapons, A, B, and C, are fired at the same target simultaneously. Distances from the target are 3/5, 1, and 2 miles respectively. The velocities of the shots are as 6, 5, and 4. The shot from A strikes the target 3 sec. after being fired. Determine time of firing the shots strike the targets from B and C.

Answers provided with problem: B: 6 sec., C: 15 sec.
What is known:

Three weapons are fired at the same target at the same time.

Distances from target are 3/5 , 1 and 2 miles respectively.

Velocities are as 6, 5, 4.

The shot strikes the target 3 sec. after being fired from A.

Want to know

Amount of time the shots take to strike the target from B and C.

Rate x Time = Distance
Distance / Rate = Tine
Distance / Time = Rate

How do I solve?

Non-homework question.

@Randy Dandy,
Let velocity of shot A be vA
Let velocity of shot B be vB
Let velocity of shot C be vC

Let time of shot A to reach target A be tA
Let time of shot B to reach target B be tB
Let time of shot C to reach target C be tC

We know vA is 3/5 miles divided by 3 secs
3/5 divided by 3 is 1/5
vA is 1/5 miles per second

so...

vB is to vA as 5 is to 6
vB is 5/6 times 1/5 miles per second
5/6 x 1/5 = 5/30 = 1/6
vB is 1/6 miles per second
tB is 1 divided by 1/6
tB = 6 seconds

vC is to vA as 4 is to 6
vC is 4/6 times 1/5 miles per second
4/6 x 1/5 = 4/30 = 2/15
tC is 2 divided by 2/15
tC is 15 seconds

Again, I say this is NOT a homework question. Also, the "IDIOT" is not appreciated. I am not. Highly disrespectful. I thought the purpose of this site was to assist, not name call.

@Randy Dandy,
Did you notice how it wasn't necessary to convert the fractions into decimals? If I had done this blindly using a calculator, I would have had some recurring decimals and some of the answers would have come out as not whole numbers (which they obviously should be).

@Tes yeux noirs,
Tes yeux noirs,

No, I didn't notice. Thanks for additional info.

@Randy Dandy,
In a test, doing it blindly with a calculator might be marked down, and I suspect the numbers were chosen for that reason.
