In an exanination a candidate must havr 40 % marks but he got failed by 20 marks by getting only 220 marks. What are the maximum marks in the examination?
(A) 400 (B) 600
(C) 500 (D) 550

We don't do homework here, but here's how to solve it.

220 = 40% of X

Actually, it is 240 = 40% X since you have to add in the twenty the test taker was short.
