One way piston cylinder valve

If you have a single actuated lift cylinder on a forklift, the fluid comes in the bottom of the cylinder the valve is locked and the shaft goes up and lifts the load. However, I don't understand how you would ever have more pressure on the top side of the piston to open the valve.
