Does "his set certainly went down a treat with female festival-goers" mean "his series of performance certainly satisfied female festival-goers"?

Context:

Serenading the crowd with a medley of chart-topping tracks, his set certainly went down a treat with female festival-goers who screamed in the audience, with some even waving their knickers in the air before throwing them at the veteran singer during his performance.
Tom still seemed in sprightly spirits despite recently hitting out at the BBC for the way they handled his sacking from singing competition, The Voice.

Yes. That is what it means. If something goes down a treat it is a success.

@Tes yeux noirs,
Thanks.
Does "recently hitting out at the BBC for the way they handled his sacking from singing competition" mean "recently vehemently criticizing the BBC for the way they handled his dismissal from his job (of performing)"?

@oristarA,

Yes. From his participation in the TV show.

"Hitting out" just means voicing a criticism. It is kind of journalist-speak.
