@lvxiaobu,
One later interpretation of the pagan 'festival of lights' as the antithesis of the depression of the winter solstice. Other interpretations are Chanukah and Diwali.

Fresco has not answered your question. To Christians, Christmas, literally "Christ's mass" is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. There is no need to go into pagan origins or arcane debates about the existence of Jesus. For those who believe, Christmas is the day that Jesus was born.

@lvxiaobu,
I should perhaps have added that biblical phrases such as 'Christ is the light of the World' (John 8:12) exemplifies the issue. Biblical scholars argue that it is unlikely that 'Jesus' was born at the time of the solstice (assuming he existed). The Roman replacement of Apollo (the Sun god) with Christ, corresponds to the December 25th Christmas Day (being the day of the re-birth of the Sun).

@lvxiaobu,
at the end of the day, it depends on the religion. every religion has a different meaning. if you are talking about Christians, it is the birth of Jesus Christ that they should be celebrating. Buddhist on the other hand acknowledge who jesus is and aspire to be like him because they consider him a bodhisattva, but they believe that Christmas is just a holiday. it's nothing to over celebrate or under celebrate. do what makes you happy on Christmas just keep in mind what is right and wrong in your mind. (pretty much)
