Do the sentenses sound correct and natural?

After 10 minutes he realized that he had been going the wrong way. and 10 minutes later he realized that he had been going the wrong way.
Actually, they sound pretty the same to me, though I feel there might be a difference.

Thje problem is simply a lack of skill in using the English lsnguag.
I believe the writer intended to say that (a)he THOUGHT he had
been going but (b) realised later that had indeed being going the wrong way ?
