I love a particular chinese dish the star of which is king prawns, but I hate de-veining the bloody things, is it really neccessary to de vein?

The reason I ask is that on a T.V. show last night a chef said that he doesn't bother doing it.

Deveining has a twofold purpose: aesthetics, and the fact that some people are allergic to the vein, but not necessarily the shrimp. If you are not allergic, and the look doesn't bother you, no need to devein.

I believe--although I can't cite chapter and verse--that the vein can cause or exacerbate gout.

Thank you each for your comments, Panzade I think I will continue to de- vein rather than eat shrimp shite.

If I may ask one other question, does this mean that I should de-vein chickens?
