Context:

The New York Times parses the survey this way:

"The report does not offer an explanation for the decline of the Christian population, but the low levels of Christian affiliation among the young, well educated and affluent are consistent with prevailing theories for the rise of the unaffiliated, like the politicization of religion by American conservatives, a broader disengagement from all traditional institutions and labels, the combination of delayed and inter religious marriage, and economic development."

The author is giving the politicization of religion is one of a list of reasons why young Americans tend to be unaffiliated--which is to say, tend not to adhere to any particular sect of Christianity, or tend not to engage in the public practice of religion.

Though politicized, it is still another form of religion in the view of NYTimes? Or is it the religion in the disguise of politics? So that the young Americans can avoid the embarrassment of attending traditional public practice of religion?
