She appeared to be enjoying herself, so the pigeons said. None of the animals ever mentioned Mollie again.

This sentence has been taken from the following link:

https://www.marxists.org/subject/art/literature/children/texts/orwell/animal-farm/ch05.htm

If I use 'or so' instead of 'so', and rewrite the sentence in the following way, what difference in meaning will arise?

"She appeared to be enjoyed herself, 'or so' the pigeons said. None of the animals ever mentioned Mollie again."

Thanks to all.

"She appeared to be enjoying herself, so the pigeon said." and "She...according to the pigeon" are about the same. It's just mentioning the source of the information.

"She..., or so the pigeon said" is casting doubt on the truth of the information.
