One of them was fatally shot, near the Canadian border.

NEW YORK -

Richard Matt, one of two escaped murderers from an upstate New York prison, has been shot and officers involved in a nearly three-week manhunt are pursuing fugitive David Sweat, a law enforcement source briefed on the investigation said Friday.

NBC News is reporting that Matt was killed

@farmerman,
Was his chest near the Canadian border?
Initial story is he was attempting to steal a guy's camper.
Sweat probably living up to his name, now.

I hope he was actually guilty. It would be horrible if he were innocent.

@neologist,
the big story is the prison staff that seem to have been involved with the original escape

@ehBeth,
Yeah
Not as good a story as if they had been wrongfully convicted and figured their escape on their own.
I'd still go see the movie, though.

For a while there, it looked like he might succeed.

I read just now that there are about 1,100 officers involved in retrieving the escaped convicts. That's an amazing amount of resource. I feel it's good in one respect... public safety, but horrible in terms of the public taxpayer expense which should have been prioritized in preventing it from EVER happening in the first place.

@Ragman,
yeh but several of the preventive resources actually were in on aiding or abetting their escape.

That's why it's so sick and sad. Hope this episode ends really soon.
