@edgarblythe,
So why are people talking about the need to change the South Carolina flag?

@gollum,
They are referring to a Confederate battle flag flying as a memorial to the Confederacy. It was not lowered when the other flags were lowered. They refuse to lower it for anything.

@edgarblythe,
Its kind of a dim gesture. The Stars and BArs was only in use for about 2.5 years as a Confederacy flag yet its been conscripted by the Klan, the American Nazii party, several 1%er biker clubs, and a few other fringe groups. SOuth Carolina keeps the damn thing flying at the state house and yet the majority of the people think its kind of offensive.

@edgarblythe,
edgarblythe-

Thank you.

What do you mean by "it was not lowered when the other flags were lowered"?

@farmerman,
Reason falls on deaf ears. I think the more you try to coax them out of it the more hostile they will become.

Actually, several states , like Mississippi, incorporate the stars and bars INTO their official state flags. I think Georgia does also

They lowered the flags to honor the slain in the church killings. But not that one.

Thank you.

Florida's flag appears similar.

@gollum,
In 2000, the SC state legislature passed the "South Carolina Heritage Act of 2000". You can follow the link, but basically it says the Confederate Battle Flag must be flown at the Confederate Memorial on the state house grounds.

@gollum,
The saltire in Florida's flag is over a white background and contains a state seal in the center.
I suppose the argument could be made about the use of St Andrews cross but many states use it.

It is also used by southerners to show pride in their culture.

They aren't ashamed of being southerners.

I don't know about that. Has there been a poll taken? I'm certainly not offended (and I'm a northerner).

There was a silly campaign awhile back to get southern states to stop flying it as an official flag over their capitol.

Now that it is no longer an official flag flying over the capitol in some of those states, in those states it no longer gets lowered when all the official flags are lowered.

The people who are now unhappy about this seem to be the same people who campaigned for the change in the first place.

The Florida flag is a tribute to their heritage as a former part of the Spanish Empire.

The Cross of Burgundy was the Flag of the Viceroyalty of New Spain.

@Walter Hinteler,
Juana la loca, Juana of Castille, was betrothed to Philip of Burgundy in 1496--no surprises there.

@edgarblythe,
They did not lower it because it cannot be lowered. It could have been taken down, but it is not possible to lower that flag to half mast. It either flies over the memorial or does not.

@oralloy,
The state legislatures, like many racists , blindly refuse to acknowledge that many people find it offensive. Instead, they use even more racist "phrases" to justify it.

"Its a symbol of our heritage". Actually its a symbol of their "heritage" of slave holding for the official 4+ years that the Confederacy was in existence.
ACtually the Star and Bars was adopted in 1861 and the flag flown over the memorial, "The Stainless Flg" was not dopted till 1863. SO the heritge issue is just a linguistic crutch

@CoastalRat,
So? Are you saying there is no way to stop it from flying the way it is now?
