I want to darken my hair AND get Balayage - Do I have to dye one color first?

I dyed my hair a dark brown several months ago but it has lightened considerably. I want to get balayage highlights in my hair but I want the base color to be darker than what my hair is right now. Will I need to do a single-process color to get it back to the dark brown I like first, or can the balayage be done in a way to darken my hair a bit too?

@kimmiet,
As long as you see a competent pro it will all be done at the same time.So a 1 step service and maybe a light toner for 5mins extra on the lighter ends is all the extra you might expect.
