Brother, can you spare a dime?

Well A2Kers the good times have ended. June 30 is the end of the financial year (in Oz) and my present contractor has made the usual 'Sorry, but there's no money in the kitty' (boss-speak for: I want a new car with my package upgrade and the money's gotta come out of the salary budget). As of yesterday I am unemployed.

A pity. The company I have been working for are some of the nicest folks. And I am just a little miffed because I couldn't quite finish off all the indexing by now - there's also a coupla issues about customising their software to allow proper searching. Bugger. Bugger. Bugger.

No new jobs on the horizon. Anyone need the services of a library professional with bad attitude and a fondness for liquor?

I'm sorry to hear this. I worked in a library for years before I was a technical writer -- good library jobs are hard to come by. Best wishes that you find something as good and very soon.

June 30th is the end of the financial year in my home state, too, and always a scary time for contractors. In this state, too, the government (and this is a LIBERAL government) decided a couple of years ago that the state library was a budget drain. They disbanded the whole thing, sold off all the books and turned the building into an office building. They said everyone could use the internet. <grimace> Another example of the world going to hell in a handbasket.

Are there any university library jobs? Could you become an internet specialist at a county library or (even better) start an internet cafe/whiskey bar?

If you made a railroad run, then you obviously didn't work for the NSW government!

Errrr Wilso, in the deep, dark past (late Ordovian) I did work for the NSW Railways!!

Of course in those days we had real managers to make the trains run on time!!

I could use some help around the farm, Mr. Stillwater. I don't have a library, but there's a few magazines in the outhouse.

Maybe you could do some of that Dewey Decimal System stuff on them.

Or help me clean the pens. Whatever.

Gee, Gus, I had heard you got sucked into the outhouse vortex. Must've been mistaken.

Stilly, I'm sorry. I like the idea though that Piff suggested, if you could swing it, an internet cafe/bar. I'd visit, if of course I could afford to visit - where you are.

Gus, you are a true friend! Whenever I am up to my armpits in manure it always reminds me of you!

Looks like an interview Thursday for some contract work in Sydney proper (not the regions). One of my duties is to raise the flag in the morning?!

<of course I did ask, 'which flag?>

Bummer, Mr S.
In the interview be sure to mention that you have 2500 posts on A2K. That should be worth something.
Good luck. I enjoy your comments. -johnboy-
