Part of the terms of the charter of "The Company of Gentlemen Adventurers Trading into Hudson's Bay" contained a provision that if the monarch ever visited their territory, they would present said monarch with a black elk and a mating pair of beavers. When Lizzie visited in the early 1970's (1972?), HBC had a formal ceremony in which they at least came up with the beavers. The male proceeded to graphically demonstrate that they were, indeed, a mating pair . . .

Then one drunken bastard yelled out "PHUAGGH! The female one looks like the Queen!" Then in 1982, we were granted our independence from Britain.

Nature left us with the glaciers. Now the cold shoulder or the icy stare, I can't say for sure. If that's from the Brits, I'm guessing it's due to the thriving ex-pat Irish culture on the East Coast.

When informed that the French had lost Canada to the Brits in 1760, Voltaire shrugged and remarked: " . . . so many acres of snow."

Of course, that twit had never met my sweetiepie . . .

Gotta say I think this is cool, but it didn't get much publicity ...

Quote:
The theme for Celebrate Canada! 2004 is Acadia: First Dialogues - The Meeting of Two Worlds. Celebrate Canada! is an opportunity to celebrate the founding of Acadia and the beginning of 400 years of continuous French presence in North America. It is also a time to commemorate the contribution Aboriginal people made to the early explorers and the impact the Europeans had on their traditional way of life - an important part of our country's living heritage.

We are justly proud of the nation we have built together over the last 137 years. Since the earliest days of our nation's history, Canada has been a land of promise. We have built a society that celebrates achievement and excellence while, at the same time, maintaining a strong respect for human rights. Our participation in Celebrate Canada! activities brings us together, strengthens our communities and helps us to understand the significance of the citizenship we all share.

National Aboriginal Day: June 21
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day: June 24
Canadian Multiculturalism Day: June 27
Canada Day: July 1
