Mary can't help (to clean) the house. Because she is busy making a hotel reservation

why we can't use help cleaning the house in above sentences? thanks

In English the phrase "can't help" has a special meaning when used with a verb ending in -ing (the gerund form). If a person "can't help doing something", it means that person can't stop themselves from doing that thing. If you pick up a hot object you can't help dropping it. If a hungry lion chases you, you can't help running away.

So, "Mary can't help cleaning the house" means Mary cannot stop herself from cleaning the house, whereas "Mary can't help to clean the house" means Mary is not able to help other people to clean the house, or do her share of cleaning the house.
