Lost on a movie name

Why, hello, everyone! I am new here and am absolutely in love with this whole place. You all seem like great, helpful, nice people.

Before I start ro ramble, my question:

There is a movie in which a man is born with a disease which causes his skin to be horribly deformed and he is often rejected and shunned by many people. He meets a blind girl and they become and item. I can really only remember two scenes; the ending, which I won't give away and a scene in which he is trying to describe color to his blind girlfriend and if I remember correctly, he described red by handing her a hot potato.

Can anyone think of the movie I am talking about? Could you tell me the name?
