Can somebody explain to me the meaning of this sentence?

It's the last statement in the sentence that I don't get.

"Given the growing body of research on the importance of Mom’s health during pregnancy, I wondered how it was that women seemed to have so little recourse during this period—to work less, to change duties, to merely acknowledge that gestation might be the least bit taxing."

I encountered it in an article and don't understand it.

@mdaryalal,
Even though women's health is very important during pregnancy they aren't often able to work less, change their duties or simply admit that their pregnancy might be tiring and difficult.
