"a place to live" or "a place to live in"?

Which is the right expression, " a place to live" or "a place to live in"? Many Chinese students feel quite confused about these two. The same question also arises in terms of the phrase "somewhere to live" and "somewhere to live in". Can any native help us with this quesion? Thanks a lot for your explanation.

Generally, I would say "a place to live", and would only add "in" if I were talking about a house, or something like that.
