Actually, hamsters were present at the first Thanksgiving. Myles Standish had a pet hamster he was very fond of, and, to the disgust of his straight laced fellow pilgrims, he had it on his lap during the celebration and would feed it table scraps from time to time.

Oh, thank God. When I saw that crispy, little dish coming out of the oven, I thought. . . . Well, never mind it was for the hamsters.
