If the furthest object we can see is around 13 billion light years away, does that mean the Universe might be 26 billion years in diameter

The furthest object whose distance has been reliably measured is whatever caused a gamma ray burst called GRB 090423 and it is approximately 13.035 billion light years away. However the size of the Universe is unknown; it may be infinite. The region visible from Earth (the observable universe) is a sphere with a radius of about 46 billion light years, based on where the expansion of space has taken the most distant objects observed.

@dalehileman,
No, it just means we only have the ability to see things that are that many light years away from us. Future technologies and explorations may reveal a lot more that we have yet to be able to see.

The universe didn't suddenly expand when telescopes were invented, the limits of our ability to see content in the universe expanded.

it is assumed here that c the speed of light is constant of course.
But it isn't.

Yea Con, thanks, and so I understand. But the idea has always bothered me because if infinite, then the chances at any moment of identical happenings (or near-identical if the whole thing is truly analog) is also infinite, which means that there are an infinite number of near-identical Universes in which Dale is chatting with Con. Don't know why this should bother me but it does

Thanks again, had forgot about that detail

Hi Que. Why not start a new thread with this assertion, of course explaining your unique position

You are not alone. Paul Davies says:

Quote:
To be sure, all cosmologists accept that there are some regions of the universe that lie beyond the reach of our telescopes, but somewhere on the slippery slope between that and the idea that there are an infinite number of universes, credibility reaches a limit. As one slips down that slope, more and more must be accepted on faith, and less and less is open to scientific verification. Extreme multiverse explanations are therefore reminiscent of theological discussions. Indeed, invoking an infinity of unseen universes to explain the unusual features of the one we do see is just as ad hoc as invoking an unseen Creator. The multiverse theory may be dressed up in scientific language, but in essence it requires the same leap of faith.

@dalehileman,
Dale, the only C that isn't constant in Que's case, is his circular-logic.

I have dubbed him QueefOnMyBreath. For a reason. He is a dick. An idiot. A troll. One-who-may-be-safely-disregarded.

my 'unique' position is no argument. It is the fallacy of popularity you use here,

Why do peeple react so neurotic and with Ah's?

I really thought I am allowed to express my opinion here.

If the speed of light is not constant then the measurements are very very very wrong.

Why may I not write that?
