@Christina0100,
Chris I suspect it has 2 windings but only one has gone open. Otherwise the thermostat could be faulty. So short it and see if then the iron heats

…but don't leave it shorted

@Christina0100,
Clearly, it's time for a new iron. They break either due to age or having been dropped. I doubt you (or a skilled technician or handyman) would want to waste anytime trying to fix this.

If it heats up only a little, that means either the heating element (simple coil) or the thermostat is worn out. If Frankly, I'd say the industry average lifetime is approx. 5 years, these days.

When I've needed a new iron (I think I've owned 2 in my life, I'm 55 and used to iron every day) I go to goodwill and get a another one for 5 bucks.

@Christina0100,
If you don't know what that means, please don't try to fix your iron. You'll start and fire and burn your house down.

@chai2,
Generally, older irons last forever (unless dropped or abused). New irons, made in China, often times last 5 years on an avg...typically.

To the OP: Goodwill is a charity org that is located across the country. you can get great deals on furniture, small appliances and/or clothes, etc.

Don't bother with it, if it doesn't heat up past slightly warm. Before you toss it, try it with different low, medium and high settings on the thermostat. Sometimes a partially broken thermostat responds to a medium or high setting before it kicks in, if it'll work at all.

Yes, they do. This one has served me well for many a year. I call her Mathilda.

@Christina0100,
Oh come on.
You did not spend 150 pounds (that's about $240 American) on a steam iron.

You talk like steam irons are some new invention.

You can get a steam iron for about 15 pounds. I take it you're somewhere in GB?

@Christina0100,
I also think of irons with steam as innovative. I do not miss sprinkling clothes with a sprinkler jammed into a Coke bottle, and then wrapping them in plastic and storing them in the ice box overnight. When I want to iron, I just want to get it going.

Do not attempt to short that iron, by the way. And do some shopping around. You paid way too much for the old one.

They were first made in the 1920's and became popular in the 1930's and 1940's.

I'm not even sure they make irons that don't have steam anymore.

BTW, I'm not sure why I've been marked down on my previous post.

Irons do NOT cost $240, unless you are some kind of professional that needs a special one.

If anyone here has one that costs that much, and rarely irons, as the OP says, I've got a bridge to sell you.

@Christina0100,
They must have seen you coming if you spent £150 on a steam iron. Especially if it conked out after a year. Here's a link to Curry's website for irons. You can get a fairly decent iron for less that £20. Probably even less at Argos.
