@marksfletchers,
Try acetone first. Put a little on a rag and quickly wipe with the grain of the wood. Don't pour it on as that will make it penetrate.

This might not be perfect, but with normal wear and polishing it will likely be unnoticeable.

Edit to Add: Acetone is sold in the paint departments of most home improvement centers.
