A Word for a Frequently Misremembered Event?

I'm trying to think of a word (or phrase) that essentially means, "A story or view of an event that people always assumed was how said event happened, but it isn't how it actually happened," or a word for when a "misremembered version of an event is treated as the popular consensus of how an event happened, even after it was proven to be a false account of what happened."

I feel like I know the word(s), but it isn't coming to me.
