Which is correct for this sentence, was or were:

Every one of my senses was on edge.

I believe it should be "were", referring more to "senses" than to "one", but wanted to be certain which way is really correct.

One (nerve) is a singular phrase that was modifies.

One (each nerve) was on edge.

Were would be right if you said "My senses were on edge."
