when you get fed up with someone constantly pissing you off, you begin to become this monster you never imagined you'd be, but you're always on the outside looking in and never consider the other person's feelings

It means the relationship is toxic, and destructive - to you. A part of your mind takes a step back because it doesn't like what you've become. It's likely to be a rather stubborn part of your mind, that's hardening itself against your behaviour (rather than his). This is toxic.
