@oralloy,
Quote:
"The benefits outweigh the headache of shooting on Imax cameras," says Abrams, who used them for a single sequence in Star Wars. "The opportunity to have an action sequence for this movie done in Imax's natural format was too delicious an idea to pass up. As a filmgoer, it's something I want to see."

(Bold/underline emphases added by me.)

This may be why Disney refused to pay for more than twenty 70MM prints.

@farmerman,
I could have told you that Ron Howard adaptation of the National Book award winning Nathaniel Philbrick book wasn't going to be worth it, simply because the trailer indicated so. Great book.

Jaded? Maybe.

@tsarstepan,
I do NOT follow any internet reviews , motly because they are a bunch of know nothing plagiarists who copy other blogs and reviews. Some do it so unashamedly that they even copy the typos. The NYT was sorta split on it . The negatives were right on about the "disneysque movie directed by Opie". With that I hqddq agree.
The special effecta were magnificent, the boat shots and the "seas in the tank" shots were quite believable.

ANY BOOK about the sea is better than MOBY DICK. Its a hodge podge of not knowing where it wants to be at any juncture. I didnt read "In the Heart..." but now Ill try to get it on audio book (listen to books on my long drives North)

@farmerman,
That's how I read Nathan Philbrick's book. Via Audible audiobook. Scott Brick is one of my all time favorite narrators.

@rosborne979,
Rotten Tomatoes is very positive with the reviews ranging from approval to fits of hysteria.

IMAX? What a bunch of jerks!

It is more Disney's fault than IMAX's though. As I understand it, Disney has decided to produce only 20 reels of 70MM film for the movie.

I think you were right to blame IMAX. According to this page, the idea of confining 70MM prints to a handful of outlying theaters did originate with IMAX:

http://www.nolanfans.com/2013/05/15/interstellar-to-be-the-last-70mm-film-imax-release/

They just decided to stop mass producing 70MM prints before they had their 4K replacement projectors ready to go in most theaters, leading to a window of unavailability that Star Wars 7 happened to land in.

I'm still a bit skeptical that 4K projectors are an adequate replacement for 70MM film. I guess time will tell.

Actually there is a case to be made that the best order to watch them is:

1 Star Wars 1977
2 Empire Strikes Back
3 Attack of the Clones
4 Revenge of the Sith
5 Return of the Jedi

(Phantom Menace is deliberately skipped.)

http://www.nomachetejuggling.com/2011/11/11/the-star-wars-saga-suggested-viewing-order/

Also good to make it the original version of Star Wars 1977. Han shot first (in fact he was the only one to shoot, and he shot in cold blood). That's actually important to the evolution of his character from an amoral scoundrel to a willing hero.

The original version of Empire Strikes Back is preferable as well:

@oralloy,
4K actually has whiter whites and therefore vague contrasts are much more clearly defined .
Im not sure but, where Ive seen different formats of movies that were remastered , I really cant see much of a difference. The real diff for me is sound. Analog is still noticeably superior for brilliant sound response

@tsarstepan,
Thankfully the fan community is making huge strides in their recreations of the original films.

There's now a fairly decent scan of a Super 8 home edition of Star Wars 1977. I haven't seen it yet, but I understand that while far from perfect, it is very watchable.

And the team that is scanning 35mm theatrical prints is close to releasing a color corrected rough draft of Empire Strikes Back.

Five years from now we will all be enjoying very high grade 1080p/24fps scans of the 35mm theatrical prints of the original versions of all three movies.
