Windows 7 purchase/instal via Computer

Is it possible to purchase and download Win7 (have WinXP now).
I'm a bit of a novice and being forced to get rid of an efficient O/S because of Microsoft.
Expensive getting it done professionally.

MS have instructions here:

I imagine they would be scary for a novice.

You would have to reinstall all your apps after. That's depressing. There is no way to go from XP to 7 without doing a clean install.
