Pope Francis sounds too much like Obama to be honored by Congress, Republican says
Source: RawStory.com

A bipartisan congressional resolution that would honor Pope Francis before his potential appearance in Philadelphia next year may not be acted upon because of Republican worries that the pontiff is perceived as being "too liberal," The Hill reports.

House Resolution 440 aims to "congratulate Pope Francis on his election and recognize his inspirational statements and actions," but according to one Republican backer of the legislation, the resolution is dead because Pope Francis is "sounding like Obama. (The pope) talks about equality — he actually used the term 'trickle-down economics,' which is politically charged."

Republicans are upset because of comments the Pope made concerning the free market. Last November, for example, Francis published his Evangelii Gandium, in which he noted that "(a)s long as the problems of the poor are not radically resolved by rejecting the absolute autonomy of markets and financial speculation and by attacking the structural causes of inequality, no solution will be found for the world’s problems or, for that matter, to any problems."

He also specifically attacked President Ronald Reagan’s signature economic policy, "trickle-down theory," writing that "(s)ome people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, encouraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the goodness of those wielding economic power and in the sacralized workings of the prevailing economic system."

@cicerone imposter,
Because they hold onto the false promise of rising above their class, after all anybody can dream of becoming President or wealthy. But less than 1% have any chance.

@Baldimo,
It was delayed because Governors including Republicans, including Gov Romney of Mass(remember him?) ASKED for it.

Like when the President asked for $3.4Billion and got half to protect the borders. When will you start bitching about how the President is spending half the money to defend the borders you think he should.

It's good to know that through my life, I haven't listened to people like you. I would never be where I am today if I believed like you did. I sure am happy I still believe in the American Dream. I'm currently living it and I didn't need a college degree to do it either. Naysayer!

@bobsal u1553115,
Why did Obama wait till there was a crisis to secure the border or even take border security seriously? The GOP has been complaining about border security since Obama became president and his only reply has been "The border is secure, lets work on giving away citizenship." Now we have a serious border issues and NOW he wants to address it.

By the way, I don't believe Obama when he says money is going to the border. He is going to use the money to take care of the illegal immigrants who are coming across. That is his priority, he could careless about the security. He doesn't want borders.

So Teapublicans cut the budget to punish the President. Like they cut the security budget for State and killed Americans in Libya. Sure taught the President a lesson!

So stupid it doesn't even call for a response. You want to believe in illogical and unreal and unsupported opinions outside the realm of reality and fact, so be it.

Bullshit. You want to cut people out of access to the American dream.

American capitalism has been very good to and for me. Why are corporations so socialistically bent?

@bobsal u1553115,
How is the states setting the min wage cutting access to the American Dream? Don't you think states have a better idea of the local economy than the federal govt does?

I'll ask again is there anything in the Constitution that gives the federal govt the ability to set the min wage?

What has Obama done in the last 6 years to secure the border? All he has done is call for the passing of the Dream Act and other immigration reform. He has done nothing to secure the border.

@Baldimo,
How is asking for a living wage for a job done by someone who worked hard such an outrageous request? I agree - I am a Republican, after all - that a national wage is wrong, Arkansas isn't Hawaii, but there needs to be a minimum, like Dutch Reagan famously said - you leave corporate taxes high because the rich will find ways of getting around most of it anyways. But the there has to an understanding: that a full time jobs requires a State's own determnation not a Federal one of what it is that constitutes what that wage is. But the Federal government has the Constitutional mandate to protect all citizens rights to equal protections and one of these is or should be a fair days pay for a fair days work. That's Republican principles right there.

@bobsal u1553115,
People seem unawares that not providing a living wage is what results in government subsidies to welfare families. If they had enough money, they would also pay taxes, and pay their own way for the necessary living expenses. This benefits everybody, including the rich, because they have more money to spend that helps our economy. Increased demand results in increased supply = more jobs. When the unemployment rate hits about 2%, the only way for wages is to go up, because the demand for workers increases. Everybody wins.

Why do politicians continue to fight this simple Econ 101 principle?

Are you drunk? That's an opinion. But it certainly isn't borne by facts.

The President has certainly been the most confining and deporting President ever. How can you tell me you don't know this? Immigration is one place the GOP could be picking up support. No-one is more conservative in American values than Hispanic immigrants, except maybe old black women. Seriously, these are people who work or worked hard, they belong to churches, get educated. But your thought is to keep wages low and encourage more illegal immigrants crowded into small homes with no protections from driving, medical health .... how do you not know any of this???

Hey, look it up. Find out how many times and how many millions its cost the Koch brothers for violating the laws of this land for the hiring of illegal aliens. Seriously. Many times. Many millions.

@Baldimo,
Illegal immigration doesn't help anyone, not even the illegal immigrant.

It does help the corporations. It keeps wages down for everyone while adding other costs including watching Congress blather on about it and doing nothing about it or anything else. Hows this do nothing Congress working out for you? The Teapublicans are holding up the naming of an Ambassador to Moscow!!! For Christ's sake. Speak on the Red, White and Blue of it for me.

If you can find the section of the Constitution that deals with wages then I would agree with you. The Tenth Amendment states "the Constitution's principle of federalism by providing that powers not granted to the federal government by the Constitution, nor prohibited to the States, are reserved to the States or the people." No where in the Constitution are wages or the federal govts ability to regulate them mentioned. This is why I have an issue with the federal govt and min wage. It isn't the business of the federal govt to set wages. They can do so for federal employees but they shouldn't be setting a federal min wage. The federal govt already has tiers or pay bands for federal jobs ie: GS-5 or GS-11 and that is how their wages are set.

I still say the ability to earn a living is on the person who is doing the working. If you don't like min wage at your fast food job, then go find a better job and leverage your experience at the new job. I really can't see paying someone who flips burgers $15/hr. The work isn't worth that much money, $10/hr maybe but not $15/hr.

What are we going to do in 5 years when those same people are still working those same jobs and suddenly $10 or $15/hr isn't enough. They want $20/hr, do you then support paying that much for fast food labor? There has to come a time when the work that is being done is valued for what it is really worth. We can't just pay more because people want more.
