Front Yard Easter Island heads

A guy living at a house several blocks away from me has cut down all the trees in his front yard, mid-trunk; and has turned them all into big woodcarvings resembling the Easter Island heads. He has them lit up at night in different colors. Except one was vandalized recently and he re-carved it into a giant foot.

Some would say it's art. I'm sure some of his neighbors disagree. What do you think?

I wish I could post a photo, but I am hardware and software poor. I'll see what I can do.

The carvings sound nice, but illuminating them in colors? Well, at least it's not The Heidelberg Project.

I didn't have any trees so I had to purchase mine. Here's the carvings with the five young ladies I purchased them from. They come to visit my yard from time to time.

Sounds cool to me. So long as there are still some trees left.

A guy around these parts carves ex-trees that the city has cut down. He picks the ones on the sidewalk and asks in advance that they cut it high. He generally carves them into chairs.

There could be lots of worser things in the front yard.

Were I in his position, I would have given them a carving of a bit of anatomy a bit higher than a foot.

These were living trees?

If so, I'd say it is a sacrilege and he'll be facing a dismaying eternity when he dies.

Why were you ignoring me? How is that any weirder than some guy carving his trees into feet and heads?

Dead tree that was going to be cut down (all the way down) anyway... whatever. Kinda cool.

Living trees... I'm with Piff.

(It was funny, cjhsa!)

Soz your taking sides.

Trees are mostly good but some time they have to come down. My former husband carved the stump of a tree we had to take out into a cat. But is was in the back yard.

Again, if they HAVE to come down, fine.

I feel really really strongly about wanton destruction of perfectly healthy trees, though. Has been happening all over in my neighborhood and it makes me livid. Everyone wants there to be trees in their next-door neighbor's yard, but for their OWN yard, well, with all that shade the grass is all patchy, and it drops all those leaves, and...

I find it infuriating. (Yes, I know there are far worse injustices.) When we lived in L.A., we had professional tree trimmers come to service our huge California live oak. I adored that tree. I sat there at the window rubbing my temples as they slashed and hacked, and finally decided they were going too far and stormed out and confronted them. They eventually convinced me that I was used to Midwestern trees, in California trees are hardier and need to be cut back that much to be healthy. They were right, the tree looked better than ever by the next year. But I was, like, really upset. Ah well.

I agree soz in fact I was listening to a program just the other day about the clear cutting going on in the north west and I agree it is a shame to see virgin forest felled.
