According to Seymour Hersh in the New Yorker, we are in danger of losing Afghanistan. Heroin production is up 600% and 3/4 of the world's supply is being delivered out of this war torn country. Our servicemen have a growing drug problem and the drug lords have been using our forces to strengthen their position. Can we fight a two front war?

In the news today was that Abdul Rashid Dostum, the powerful North-Afghan warlord, has reimposed his personal military rule over "his" region. The government-appointed governor has fled, and so has the commander of the Afghan army division that was stationed there.

The American army tried to fly in 750 of the Afghan army's soldiers it has trained, but these arrived too late to prevent Dostum's capture of the province's capital, Faryab. They now face two- to threethousand of Dostum's men.

President Karzai has also sent 1500 troops to Herat, in the West, where warlord Ismail Khan is getting restive. His militia has been clashing with rival warlord militias - and far outnumber Karzai's army troops.

These are, of course, merely the "quiet" regions - after all, in the east and the south of the country Karzai is still actually facing Taliban and Al-Qaeda rebels.

Well, considering the Afghan/Pakistani border area appears to be the home of AlQaeda HQ, and most probably even Osama himself ...

it would have made sense to keep focusing there.

Too late now, tho. Leave Iraq now and AQ will move its HQ there. Leave Afghanistan, and itll set up there. Catch 22.

on 6/30 we turn Iraq over to UN. if (when) they mess it up, we come back, with comand staff amd one battalion only, the rest of UN provides troops. if they dont like it, we take a pass on the next 2 or 3 milatary missions.

Makes sense to me. But wouldn't it been easier to get the UN behind us BEFORE the invasion?
