Dolly Parton wrote the song in 1974, when she left the "Porter Wagoner Show" to go out on her own.

Dolly Parton wrote the song. I think it was for Porter Wagoner when she left his show.

Written by Dolly Parton as a farewell song to Porter Wagoner upon her departure from Wagoner's TV show ... somewhere around the early 70's as I recall. She's recorded it several times since, once about ten years ago as a duet with Vince Gill ... that's her most recent recording of it, I think, on the album "Something Special", which was more or less a compilation of her favorite songs by herself and others. I've got it around here somewhere ... played it just the other day.

I'll skip my turn though; unfair advantage - I remember the liner notes from the album Laughing

Besides, I'm not a regular visitor to this thread ... dunno how I popped in (musta been a misclick on my part - I thought I was headed for a different thread Embarrassed ), and just thought it was really cool I had the current answer. Go ahead and do another, edgar.

OK... I should maybe re-word that question....

"Killing Me Softly With His Song" was written by whom, and inspired by whom (a singer)?

I was answering the question that Edgar asked....

(he and I asked a question at exactly the same time)

LOL.... no, not Brenda Lee....

here's a hint..... for the "inspired by" person..... He wrote a song and people all over the world were trying to figure out the true interpretation of the song..... it was "killing me softly with his song".... to voice the frustrations of everyone who was listening to the song over and over again.....

Eventually, he revealed that he wrote the song in dedication to Buddy Holly.....
