I lathe those that use "texting / messaging slang" in their posts here.

For example: "u", instead of "you", etc.

They just want to show that they are at the cutting edge of modern communications. If that's where they are it's understandable that they would seek to strut it before the gawping eyes of us old fashioned fuddies. One can hardly "loathe" it. That's much too strong a word.

"Loathe" is for things like treading in dogshit or the custard being too thick for the Bakewell Tart (genuine).

Most folks don't seem to know the difference between envy and jealousy, nowadays.

They'll say "Aren't you jealous?" when the meaning they intend is "envious".

I think "jealous" refers to one's own sense of self-esteem as in devoted to one's reputation. Taking care to protect it. A lady may be jealous of her reputation for purity of mind.

Envy is when you bear a grudge or malice towards what others have.

You feel jealousy when your girlfriend seems to be responding favorably to another man. But you are envious of that man. As Spendius has correctly said, jealousy implies a sense of protecting something, e.g. one's reputation or perceived property. But you can't be "jealous" that someone has something you don't. You can only be envious.
