Sow seed of life?

Reply Mon 10 Jun, 2013 10:29 am
Do you think "sow seed of life" sounds natural?

Our own planet earth is so small in the far corner of the great universe. I doubt that God would have bothered to sow seed of life in this insignificant star.
If God decided to get life started in the universe after Big Bang, He would certainly sow seed of life in most parts of the universe. And now, the earth seems the only planet on which life goes riots, while enormous proportions of the cosmos are so bleak and lifeless. This reminds us of the possibility: Life may have commenced without the help of God.

@oristarA,
Depends on how you look at it, Ori

She just happens to be constituted in the only say She can, that is to do the possible; and one of those possibilities is the evolution of the humanoid

Seems Ori very reasonable observation

Who says so

Recent studies seem to indicate there are more planets than stars. With 300 billion stars in each of 300 billion galaxies the Universe must be teeming with life

That's also true since there's so much unused space

Depending of course entirely on how one defines "God"

I think 'sow the seed of life' sounds more natural. This is a phrase often used by Christians when talking about this very topic.

@contrex,
Thanks Con but I see it as a matter of style, like it better without

@contrex,
beat me to it. Without the article "the" it sounds a bit awkward but is probably marginally acceptable.

I would have preferred a past tense phrase of"had sewn the Seed (s) of life".

I think that when we sow seed without a definite article ("the") we are sowing real seed - to sow cotton seed, canola seed, whatever, but when speaking generically or metaphorically "God" sowed the seed of life, or troublemakers sow the seeds of dissension. Because in these situations nobody actually scatters real seeds anywhere.

Does "say" here mean "the chance to speak"?

Wise man.
I wonder how you'd define God.
Care to tell me first?

Flowers go riot - seems to be okay.
But I'm not sure whether "life goes riots" is acceptable.

Not okay. Use the word riot sparingly and carefully. You can talk about a riot of flowers, but it's rather unusual. Never "go riot". It's a noun, and used as a metaphor.
Your dictionary will be of help. Or a thesaurus?

I think he may have been thinking of 'run riot'. Things definitely can run riot. If people run riot, they behave in a way that is not controlled, running in all directions or being noisy or violent:

I dread them coming round because they let their kids run riot.

If your imagination runs riot, you have a lot of strange, exciting, or surprising thoughts:

My imagination was running riot, thinking of all the ways that I could spend the money.

I can definitely imagine flowers running riot in a garden in the spring.

Me too but I wanted him to research that for himself.

Ori, a riot, a profusion, of blooms...a powerful metaphor. Let your imagination run riot.
