color walls (in this context, not white) and art: what do you think

Ever since I first noticed that I liked the wall behind some paintings I was keen on from the Phillips Collection shown at the Santa Barbara Museum, this back in the seventies, I've been interested in what I think works with different types of art. Now lots of museums and galleries use color. How about you?

I'm reminded of this today, looking at a photo in the Guardian -

"Anna Reynolds, curator for the Royal Collection, views two portraits of Francis Stuart, Duchess of Richmond, dressed in female and male outfits, at the Queen's Gallery in Buckingham Palace, London. The portraits form part of the In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion exhibition which will open on 10 May." Photograph: Toby Melville/Reuters

I like that blue.
I think.
It backs up the darks while not just being more very dark and makes the lights sing.
Or does it?
I had a moderate blue living room once, and paintings looked good on it, looking at photos now, and so did the people in the room in those photos.

@ossobuco,
I think I'd have to see that whole room -- the blue doesn't hit me quite right for those portraits. It just seems a bit too vibrant.

But as to art on colored walls I say YES!

I'm still working to eliminate all the white in my house but I always consider what will be hanging on the walls before I pick a color.

@boomerang,
I get you on the too vibrant, that's where my qualm is. I tend to like somewhat grayed colors better most of the time.

My house is still ick whitewalled (my view, but perfect for selling) because if I had budget to fix, other matters would come first.

@ossobuco,
I'll show you three photos from the seventies - re identifying, nobody looks like this now, and two out of three people are theater people (whom I would be very surprised not liking seeing themselves) and the woman still a long friend, also artist - so I'm not thinking it's invasive. (If so, I'll take it down).

Blue is interesting - I never thought of it in northern california, not quite sure why not, maybe the more prolonged grey skies in that area, and I don't think of it here in new mexico either. Must have been my/our blue period.

I'll post after scanning and blabla.

@ossobuco,
edit too late to say I'm not sure. I am at least half liking the vibrant.

@ossobuco,
I think those painting would look pretty on a nice gray blue. Like the color in the ruffle on the shirt or the clouds in the sky.

We're really just left with big, expensive projects on our house -- things that require permits and plumbers and electricians -- so they're off the table for a while. Color is the only thing I can really afford to do so I have some fun with that.

@ossobuco,
Yeah! Scanning!

I have a strange relationship with blue. I love it but have learned that I don't live with it well.

Photobucket is now beyond my intelligence, as anything I need is in small print.

Meantime,

I highly doubt that I did that - plus I posted three photos, not just one, and I had not posted any of those before.

I did delete some photos after a warning that turned out to be wrong from another poster, his confusion. But surely not these obscure photos posted just now.

Has photobucket gone crazy?

I have been over there since I started getting accused of cluttering up my "mental space" and such things.

I always tend to think this may be me, but this is ridiculous. I just scanned them, they're there, and there's a no.

I'll try one more time, or I'll paint them blue.

@ossobuco,
I like the blue (or at least the blue that I see on my monitor).

I don't think I could live in a room that blue but I could happily spend an hour in it - and I like how it works with the particular paintings.

but ........ my painting instructor when I was a kid told my parents I had an unusual sense of colour - which might have been a nice way of saying interesting
