The words "oral surgeon" are making me think that maybe I was wrong.

Neither have I ever had stitches. I am not sure where they would go, since all the work is done inside the tooth?

Root Canal is done basically done to stop the pain cause due to it and also to protect the tooth.
The process of root canal involves cleaning the tooth initially with the help of machine that dentists have, this can cause a little of pain. Then after that the screw is fitted inside the tooth and cement like solution is filled in the tooth. Root Canal helps to protect the tooth.
