Richard Burton reading Under Milk Wood - just brilliant
and Jonathan Pryce
As you'll note above, Burton was not among the 5 Welsh acting Oscar winners, despite being nominated 7 times. And i've read that mere nominees' average life expectancy is less than winners! He was recently voted, perhaps not too surprisingly, among the top 10 in a poll to find "100 Welsh Heroes". I did have a cassette of an Under Milk Wood recording, narrated by Anthony Hopkins and Jonathon Pryce, with a cast including Bonnie Tyler, and a little Elton John ditty. I gave it away to a friend as he was setting out on his acting career, before he became well-known on T.V's East Enders.

Richard Burton for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff," "Becket" and "Night of the Iguana."
Richard Burton.
It was my dream for many years to see him on the stage, and I finally managed to (though perhaps in not his best work - it was the early 1980's run of Camelot). He was as spell-binding as I'd expected. Perhaps even more so.
His King Arthur on stage is a keystone of performances in a musical -- I'm afraid even Richard Harris couldn't top it.
Interesting.
Not my read on it at all.
As much as I was thrilled to see Burton in that performance, and enjoyed it, well, I guess I'm fussy. I've been very lucky in what I've had the opportunity to see and experience.
I've really only got one goal left in terms of theatre - and that's seeing Judi Dench. I'd better do that right quick.
Lightwizard, we're talking about two very different experiences - Burton in Camelot in 1960/61 and Burton in Camelot in 1980. (I wondered how he could have possibly won a Tony for what I saw/heard - he didn't - it was nearly 20 years earlier).
On the other hand, if I'd saved my program from the 1980 Toronto production, I'd apparently be able to sell it on E-bay
Was certainly not the same man. Alcohol and personal troubles had taken their toll by 1980.
I saw the very last performance of Ethyl Merman in "Gypsy" and it was obvious she wanted to make it a good one as a swan song for that musical.
