Softner using salt, but not softening water

Our Peerless 30 FNE 3/4" which we installed June 1999, is using a lot of salt but not softening the water properly. The water tastes bad of salt after regeneration. Leaves a salt residue in buckets and on dishes in dishwasher. Have done treatments with Iron Out with no luck. Originally hardness set at 30 grains and now we have it set at 38 gr. Iron residue noted on faucets. Iron smell to water. Have used consistently Iron out salt.

@Laurawalker,
It sounds to me as if there may be a bypass valve open causing hard water to the home. The setting on the softener are dependent on the water chemistry and household usage (# of people), capacity of softener. So telling us that it is set at 38 means really nothing. It may not be regenerating properly either, too much water in brine tank, improper rinse cycle or a host of other issues. Sounds like it,s time for a service call.
