I am looking for a five-letter word with a long A sound. The clue: "It flies in the sky." Here's the rub: the only "tall" letter (b,d,f, etc.) is in space two. No other letters are "tall" or "hanging" (g, j, p, etc.) which lets out 'plane.' What have you?
When you say "a long A sound" do you mean:
A as in SLAY or
A as in BAD
Clarification
The long A sound is as in slay. (We are sure the book had a misprint and the answer really should be 'plane,' but I'd sure like to find another that fits!)

Based on the criteria that you have posted here it looks likely that your suggested answer is the correct one:
PLANE looks good to me.
