Interior Secretary Norton signed off opening 7.23 million acres of Alaska wilderness for oil leases but hey, 102,000 acres were set-aside as a special area. The newly opened area for oil development has estimates ranging from 6 billion to 13 billion barrels (a 6 month USA supply) and will take an estimated 10 years to reach fruition

This is essentially the Bush energy policy. The first estimates were over 30 Billion bbls , now the initial work has shown that anything under 7 billion barrels will use almost as much energy as it produces.
