TAKIN' A SHOT . . .

Not content to allow this sleepy burg to quietly enjoy its insignificance, some one of our local gun lovers has decided to entertain him-(her- ?)self by taking pot shots at people on the southern end of the beltway around Columbus, Ohio. On Sunday, in the middle of the night, a bullet ricocheted off the hood of a passenger car, and shattered in the windshield. That round has now been linked to the 18 previous incidents, one of which killed an elderly lady in November (the round entered the driver's side window and struck the woman, leaving the question of whether or not the shooter had murderous intent).

A local newspaper report[/color]

What is up with someone like this? Does the right to bear arms not suffice? Do gun owners lust for the opportunity to take pot shots at someone, anyone?

Yeah, all gun owners have nothing better to do to quelch our bloodlust. Rolling Eyes

(The perp is a nut. Don't go blaming an entire class of people for the actions of one.)

Guns don't kill people.

Bullets kill people.

Dunh.

If everyone with an unregistered or otherwise illegal gun would take a shot at an NRA member, both problems would be cured in a matter of days.

Fishin', i have no doubt of your rectitude in this matter, but i'm stirrin' the pot, so i can't afford to publicly acknowledge as much.

Seal, excellent idea.

So far, Soz, it does not appear that the shooter is trying to kill anyone. Also, the shootings are clustered on the south side of the county. But bullets have been recovered from a south-side school, from two school buses, from a truck, and now a passenger vehicle. It appears that at least eight of the shootings can be linked ballistically. I believe the other eleven incidents have been linked based on the m.o. and the calibre of the weapon used. This is not something which causes me concern about my personal safety--but i would think twice, and then thrice, if someone wanted me to drive to Canal Winchester or Lockport.

The article was a little confusing, but it looked like at least one person was killed...?

Quote:
The last bullet linked ballistically with the slaying of Gail Knisley was fired at a house at 901 Brown Rd. on Dec. 15.

Ah, I just saw the sidebar, that explains everything well. (Knisley has been the only fatality.)

It is not entirely certain that the shooter intended to kill that woman, Boss. The bullet entered the driver's side window, in what appeared to be aimed so as not to hit the driver. The police have been uncertain if the shooter knew there were a passenger. Whether or not, of course, if apprehended, the shooter would be charged with murder, which a clever law dog might get reduced to reckless manslaughter.

I just sent this to E.G., I've been kind of hoping for a position at the University of Chicago while he's thinking OSU looks good, here is his reponse:

Soz, i didn't know he's at U of Chi. My uncle attended divinity school there. He lived on Blackstone between 51st and 53rd. I'd be wearin' a kevlar vest if i lived there.

Actually, bullet wounds only kill people who were standing in the wrong place at the time.

I'm amused by the notion that this shooter is not actually trying to kill people. Huh? Firing at moving cars?

Reminds me of a funny line in "Chafed Elbows", an early film by Robert Downey (Sr.). A cop is narrating (as a voice over): "I fired a warning shot into his left shoulder..."

Hmmm - if it weren't for the PEOPLE, there would be no bullet wounds!

Kill all the people, and bullets will able to roam freely, as god and nature intended....
