After learning of a number of burglaries in their neighborhood,
a mother and 17-year-old son checked their Monte Alto, Texas
property for signs of theft at around 1:45 a.m.

While securing the property, a group of three men approached
the pair in a vehicle and made clear their intent to rob them.
The son, who was carrying a shotgun, exchanged fire with the
criminals, striking one and causing all to flee.

Police later captured two of the suspects and have arraigned one
on felony burglary charges. (The Brownsville Herald, Brownsville, Texas, 08/07/11, The Monitor, McAllen, Texas, 08/09/11)

Its better to be able
to handle emergencies, than it is to be helpless in the face of them.
