leave out? I wasn't even using actual numbers. I was trying to point out that percentages can be easily used to mislead the reader into thinking something other than what the numbers would be.

If you want to talk inflation, sure but I am not quite sure which way you are expressing your concern. Is inflation higher under obama? I think it is but do you have an objection to that? Since you brought it up, I am wondering if you think inflation was higher under reagan and that is why the numbers would still favor obama over reagan. I'm guessing here because you didn't explain your position.

Comparing a 1980 dollar to a 2011 dollar fails to account for inflation.
A 2011 dollar has a value of $0.35 in 1980.

Okay so your argument follows that since inflation is worse during obama naturally he would have to spend more for the same amount of services which skews the numbers? Well inflation does have an effect on the dollar amounts, I would never object to that.

On a side note I would say when inflation is higher it actually means the government has accumulated more taxation. By reducing the value of the dollar the government indirectly creates a hidden form of taxation. I don't think very man pick up on this fact.

In other words even though inflation might be higher under obama, it also means the government is taxing the people more as well. That in turn actually cancels out the inflation factor when considering spending.

If you want me to explain how inflation is a form of taxation I will but for now I won't make anyone suffer through reading it.

No, my argument isn't that at all. The rate of inflation at either point in history has nothing to do with my argument. (Inflation in 1980 was much higher than it is in 2011, the opposite of your statement.)

I was merely pointing out that your statement about comparing the dollar amounts over different years is meaningless when you are talking debt.
The US debt for the revolutionary war was about $77 million.
The US debt for WW2 was $210 billion
The US debt for Afghanistan and Iraq has been $1.2 trillion.
Comparing those figures without accounting for inflation would imply that the first 2 wars listed cost very little.

That was a speech explaining why it was important to not default. If we defaulted, THEN we wouldn't have enough money to pay our bills.

Partly as a result of that speech -- calls and emails flooded in to lawmakers the next day -- default was avoided.

While I agree that the government is at the mercy of the economy, and that the rich control it; I would have to say that giving into the balckmail of the rich is a huge mistake... They may think they know what is good for them individually, but the have no idea what is good for their class and when what is good for their class is seen as terrible for the country, their influence and even their lives may be finished...
