U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday.

The Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.

At least 10 other people, including members of her staff, were hurt. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson. Her condition was not immediately known.

Giffords was talking to a couple when the suspect ran up firing indiscriminately and then ran off, Michaels said.

The suspect was tackled by a bystander and taken into custody. He was not injured.

Giffords was first elected to represent Arizona's 8th District in 2006. The "Congress on Your Corner" events allow constituents to present their concerns directly to her.

More details to come.

I guess if you tell enough people that their country has been taken away, that their liberties are at immediate risk and that the Democrats have brought us to the brink of Armageddon, some few of them will act out whether with bombs being sent through the mails or this.

Is she the one who is always defending NASA?

Why would anyone target her of all people?? My God.

There is no good reason for this shooting.

@oralloy,

@Cycloptichorn,
How horrible!

I am of course interested in the why of it. Random, or targeted but personal (not political), or political.

Oy.

@oralloy,
Giffords has been targeted by right wingers because of her moderate position on immigration and her support of health care. Her office has been vandalized a couple of times because of these issues, and there are pretty vitriolic rhetoric against her from the tea party.

The tea party has been talking about a 2nd amendment solution about these issues. This is tragic, but not surprising.

Just confirmed that it was fatal (other accounts have just said that she was shot but that her current condition was unknown):

Quote:
TUCSON, Arizona (Reuters) – Representative Gabrielle Giffords was fatally shot during a public appearance on Saturday, National Public Radio said.
NPR said a gunman ran up to Giffords, 40, a Democrat, and opened fire. The suspect was taken into custody, NPR said.

Media reports said about a dozen other people also were shot.

CNN said that bystanders report her taking a 'point-blank shot to the head.' 12 others shot, condition unknown.

Sad day

It is hardly surprising that a Democratic Congresswoman from AZ was shot. Guns + a state government which made a name for itself based on fear and hatred + the rampancy of the Tea Totalitarians are a recipe for violence.

I'm hearing now that she's still alive and is in surgery.

@sozobe,
and now it's in question whether she was killed or not again -- "conflicting reports":

Yahoo/Reuters:

Quote:
"She is currently in surgery. She's alive," University Medical Center spokeswoman Darci Slaten told Reuters. Slaten added that nine other shooting victims were being treated at the hospital.

@sozobe,
The most detail I've seen so far here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/us/politics/09giffords.html

It seems to indicate that she was the target (for whatever reason), rather than being caught in a more random shooting incident.

Sarah Palin's political action committee--SarahPAC--has published a list of Democratic politicians to be "put in gun sights" for the next election. Miss Gifford was on her list.

Palin's gun sight list, at the Huffington Post.

I'm not for a moment suggsting that Miss Palin is behind this. Certainly, though, no one would ever accuse Miss Palin of good taste, or good sense. This will be a very unfortunate coincidence for Miss Palin.

The Tea Party supported Sharron Angle for senator in Nevada. Angle was criticized for remarks that people will use "the bullet box" rather than the ballot box to have their voices heard.

Angle used the term: "2nd Amendment solutions."
