Come and listen to a story about a man named Jed
A poor mountaineer, barely kept his family fed,
Then one day he was shootin at some food,
And up through the ground came a bubblin' crude.
Oil that is, black gold, Texas tea.

Lost in history...the ancient mesopotamians knew oil was underground.

@mickey joe,
Oil comes to the surface naturally in some places. When it was found to be useful, they followed it below ground and got more. Eventually, they went looking for it. Since natural gas is odorless, the discovery was probably accidental - and abrupt.

I made the up, mostly, but it sure sounds plausible.
