American Political/Religious Extremist Groups on the Web
While these organizations vary in their degree of wackiness, they all have one thing in common: Each has taken at least one outspoken stand against social diversity, individual liberty, and universal justice. Many of them are made up of the folks who, in another culture, would be running a government that beheads those who disagree with them. Others are merely libertarians (whose philosophy as nearly as I can tell is something about how the guy with the biggest gun wins).
Still others seem to have escaped from a mental institution. Visit their web sites. I leave it to you to figure out which is which.
Accuracy in Academia -
http://www.aim.org/AIA -- One of Reed Irvine's organizations. (I'll give you a hint: there's a dog with a foaming mouth somewhere in his family tree.) Examples of "accuracy" include virulent attacks on diversity and other "PC" agendas.
Accuracy in Media -
http://www.aim.org -- Another Irvine operation. They do for the media what their friends at AIA do to the campus
Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty -
http://www.acton.org/ -- Named for 19th century religious philosopher/historian John E.E.D. (Lord) Acton. Like the Promise Keepers, an organization whose goals seem lofty at first blush, you'll want to read beyond the headlines at this web site.
Alliance for America -
http://home.navisoft.com/alliance/afaweb/afahome.htm -- These folks are libertarian environmentalists. Go figger.
American Center for Law and Justice -
http://www.aclj.org/ -- Another Pat Robertson organization, the ACLJ was founded to counter the successes of the ACLU in their continued defense of the separation of Church and State.
American Conservative Union -
http://www.conservative.org/ -- One of America's most venerable conservative institutions, the ACU has tended to be more of a libertarian bent than today's neocons.
American Family Association -
http://www.afa.net -- Rev. Wildmon's collection of the most extreme mouth-foamers around. I'm not sure what these folks would do if it weren't for homosexuality.
Americans for Tax Reform -
http://www.atr.org -- If you've been wondering whatever happened to the John Birch Society, look no further. Now that the Evil Empire is dead, the greatest threat to the American Way of Life is taxation.
American Times Today -
http://www.attoday.com -- This is a borderline inclusion that was suggested by some friends. It appears to be an online bookstore with a heavy emphasis on fantasy/sci-fi. If you look at any of the subject areas that might contain "controversy", you'll find a plethora of "conspiracy" lunacy, anti-semitism, America-firstism, homophobia, etc. But the site itself doesn't seem to be pushing an in-your-face agenda. If you know anything more about attoday and the people behind it, I'd appreciate your feedback.
Cato Institute --
http://www.cato.org/ -- A libertarian think tank. Property is King. These folks are strong on individual liberty but weak on common sense (or common anything -- It's "individual," not "common," stupid!)
Catholic Alliance (a Christian Coalition Spinoff) -
http://www.catholic.org/alliance -- just exactly what you'd expect if Pat Robertson were to marry the late Bishop Cardinal O'Connor. Homophobia, anti-choice, theocratic rants.
Center for Education Reform -
http://www.edreform.com -- They're against teachers' unions, for public funding of religious schools, and they throw in a little sexism and white supremacy here and there for added flavor
Christian Coalition -
http://www.cc.org -- The mother ship, from which all the rest of the religious extremists receive their instructions for intergallactic dominance. Pat Robertson's the Founder. Theocracy and the "Homosexual Agenda" are the main themes
Citizens for Excellence in Education/NACE -
http://www.nace-cee.org/ -- "NACE" stands for National Association of Christian Educators. They'll teach you how to make sure your kids never do know where babies come from. They'll show you how to get Christianity taught in your local schools again.
Citizens for a Sound Economy -
http://www.cse.org/cse/ -- More libertarians, with a focus on why money is more important than the environment.
Claremont Institute --
http://www.claremont.org -- "To restore the principles of the American Founding to their rightful, preeminent authority in our national life." Another one of those ideas that sounds pretty good until you read the details. Mr. Peabody and Sherman have been hired to load us all into the Wayback Machine and set the date to 1950. Opens with a Lincoln quote that would have Abe spinning if he could see the use they're making of it. One of the slowest web sites on the net.
Concerned Women For America --
http://www.cwfa.org -- School prayer, school choice, "Family" Values, the "Homosexual Agenda", boycott American Airlines . . . It's all here. These people know exactly what's wrong with America (Lots!) and exactly what to do about it!
Eagle Forum -
http://www.eagleforum.org -- Phyllis Schlafly is the grandmother of the "ladies against women" movement in America. You'll find plenty of foaming-mouthed canines here.
Empower America -
http://www.empower.org/ -- Ultraconservative mass marketer Paul Werych's populist mass-media organization. Werych is my candidate for the person most likely to be the author of the fabulously successful strategy for using people's fear of homosexuality to get them to support the most outrageous, un-American agendas. Bill Bennett and a handfull of fellow travelers are along for a patina of respectability.
Family Research Council -
http://www.frc.org/ -- "Defending
Family, Faith, and Freedom." This is a pulpit for Gary Bauer, the
most likely heir to Ralph Reed as spokesmodel for the radical/religious extremists now that Reed's in private consulting.
Free Congress Foundation -
http://www.fcref.org/ -- This is Werych's think tank. Here's where his storm troopers (see Empower America) get their marching orders.
God Hates Fags -
http://www.godhatesfags.com -- I'm not kidding! Complete with Bible references to prove it! If it weren't for what a little paperhanger with a mind like this did in central Europe earlier in this century, this site would be hillarious. Actually, it's pretty damned funny despite it's evil sickness. See Fred Phelp's nomination for the International Iconic Symbol for homosexuality. Watch him foam at the mouth (complete with realtime audio & video). These folks are a parody of ignorant, hate-filled human beings.
Heritage Foundation -
http://www.heritage.org/ -- Another venerable right-wing institution. Your standard cast of characters with your standard bizarre mix of ersatz libertarianism, traditional conservativism, and Christian fundamentalism.
Home School Legal Defense Association -
http://www.hslda.org -- The name says it all. Let's keep 'em from reality for as long as we can.
Hoover Institution -
http://www-hoover.stanford.edu -- A friend of mine was a Hoover fellow a couple of years ago. He reports that these folks don't live on the same planet (or even in the same galaxie?) as you and I. For a post-WWII 1940s world view, tune in here.
Hudson Institute -
http://www.hudson.org/hudson/ -- An Indianapolis think tank that professes no political agenda, but notes that their 35+ years of experience has taught them the importance of the conservative Christian way of thinking. And I have a bridge I'd like to speak with you about.
Leadership Institute -
http://www.lead-inst.org/ -- You'll find a lot of familiar far-right names here. This is Morton Blackwell's training center for tomorrow's brownshirts. Want to take over your local school board? County government? Mortie'll show you how!
National Association of Scholars -
http://www.nas.org/ -- The Flat Earth Society on Campus. Be sure you don't miss their fabulous "Sexual harrassment is a terrible thing, but . . . ." statement.
National Center for Policy Analysis -
http://www.ncpa.org -- These folks call their web site "Idea House", and they've got some lulus: Concealed carry laws cut crime; military spending = good; social spending = bad;
National Right to Life Committee -
http://www.nrlc.org/ -- An interesting dichotomy: a gathering of folks who on virtually all other issues insist that the less government intervention into individual lives the better, have come together here to promote the proposition that the government knows better than a woman and her doctor when the matter under consideration is whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term.
Rutherford Institute -
http://www.rutherford.org/ -- Dedicated to the concept that America's founders were just kidding when they separated Church from State.
Traditional Values Coalition -
http://www.traditionalvalues.org -- Rev Lou Sheldon's fount of hate, fear and ignorance. These people make Pat Robertson and Jerry Fallwell look like regular folks.
U.S. Taxpayers' Party -
http://www.ustaxpayers.org/ -- Howard Phillips. Need we say more? The John Birch Society in drag. (And it ain't perty.)
Young America's Foundation -
http://www.townhall.com/yaf/home.html -- Mom, apple pie, homophobia, and a world view that comes right out of Father Knows Best
